A Wet Kitchener Trail - Section Eleven

Mountain Biking Sherwood Pines 'Tornado Alley'

On a cold, wet and muddy Friday evening I headed over to Sherwood Pines in Nottinghamshire to sample its only red route, the Kitchener Trail.

What a difference a bit of rain makes. Normally a flat fast flowing trail with berms and rollers, and a nice mix of rocks and roots. This time a muddy, gritty energy sapping water filled trail. The 13km took over an hour to complete and my brake pads well and truly ruined.

Over the next few weeks, I'll be breaking the root down section by section so you can see how the trail fares in the rain.

This week is the release of section eleven video. Check it out above.

Section eleven named ‘Tornado Alley’ is by far my favourite section. It is predominantly downhill with sweeping flowing turns, a lovely section. With it just off the national route 6 cycle network it is easy to incorporate it into several my local routes without having to do the whole Kitchener Trail.

As you enter ‘Tornado Alley’ from the fire road you are straight into it. A gentle right followed by a gentle left, then right, left, right, bump, right, left, right and so it goes on. All at pace until you hit the clearing then there is a sweeping right up hill before you start again slightly downhill through the clearing. The section ends as you drop back onto the fire road.

The rain hadn’t disrupted the flow at all and there wasn’t as much water collection as on the previous sections so still as good as ever.

Keep an eye out for next week’s look at the Kitchener trail section twelve.

The sun is back in the UK. After a couple of days of rain, heavy in places, its heating up again. I jumped out of bed this morning to get out on the bike and capture the Sun rising. Check out the views....

One of my favourite short routes is in a little bit of wood between Derby Road and Cauldwell Dam , near Mansfield. It joins a number of local routes between Newstead Abbey, Hucknall, Sherwood Forest, Kirkby and Sherwood Pines. Cauldwell Dam Descent doesn’t disappoint....

Some trails can be exhilarating, some can be challenging but most favourite trails provide a great feeling at the end, be it achievement or pure adrenaline. One of my favourite trails is the trail down church hill....
